BIO-2-PRINT: Turning Natural Waste into the Future of Construction
At Future Cast, we’re proud to be part of BIO-2-PRINT, an ambitious, international project that’s rethinking how we build our world. Together with partners from Finland, Sweden, and Ireland, we’re transforming natural waste like seaweed, wool, and hemp into sustainable materials for 3D printing in construction and manufacturing.
The things we usually discard — from farm leftovers and industrial fibres to seaweed — could become the raw materials for your next home, office building, or public bench.
Why This Matters
BIO-2-PRINT is a movement toward a circular economy, where nothing is wasted and everything is reused. It’s about reducing our dependence on fossil-based materials and creating new opportunities for local jobs, innovation, and green growth.
This is especially important for rural and coastal regions like ours, where so many natural materials go underused or ignored. What if the leftovers from your farm could become part of a 3D-printed building?
What’s Happening - Over the next three years, BIO-2-PRINT will:
- Map and collect local bio-waste (from fields, forests, oceans, and more)
- Extract valuable compounds to boost the strength and sustainability of 3D-printing materials
- Pilot real-life 3D printing projects using these new materials — think walls, panels, and structural components
- Create a practical industry roadmap, helping businesses move from idea to implementation
As a centre for digital construction and green innovation, Future Cast is leading the way in showing how traditional industries can go high-tech and low-impact at the same time.
We’re:
- Hosting hands-on workshops and demo events
- Providing access to our cutting-edge 3D printing equipment
- Training others in how to use these new materials
- Bridging the gap between research, business, and community
