Why Becoming a Mentor Might Be the Most Impactful Thing You Do This Year
What if 1–2 hours a month could genuinely change someone’s career trajectory - and quietly sharpen your own leadership skills at the same time?
Mentorship in Construction: What Really Makes It Work?
ConstructHer Future Mentorship Programme, an Erasmus+ initiative coordinated by Future Cast, connecting experienced construction professionals with young women who are just starting their journey in the sector.
During a recent Mentorship Insights Panel, mentors, educators, and practitioners from across Europe shared what actually makes mentorship effective in real life, not in theory.
A few powerful takeaways stood out:
- Start with clarity, not pressure
Successful mentors spoke about the importance of agreeing expectations early:
- How often will you meet?
- How will you communicate?
- What’s realistic, given busy schedules?
A simple “way of working” agreement builds trust and prevents misunderstandings, especially in fast-paced industries like construction.
2. Share your story – it matters more than you think
Mentors who shared their own career twists, doubts, and mistakes found that it built trust instantly.
Your journey helps mentees realise there’s no single “right path” in construction.
Becoming a mentor in the ConstructHer Future programme is flexible, supported, and designed around real working lives.
If you’re even considering mentoring, we invite you to explore it further by completing the short mentor application form
Completing the form doesn’t commit you – it simply helps us understand your background, interests, and availability so we can match you thoughtfully with a mentee.
The benefits of being the mentor in the ConstructHer Future programme
What’s in It for You as a Mentor?
- Stronger leadership and communication skills
- Greater confidence in coaching and feedback
- Fresh perspective from the next generation
- A sense of purpose beyond day-to-day project delivery
- Recognition and a European certificate of participation
- Connection to a European network of professionals committed to inclusion in construction
And no, you don’t need prior mentoring experience, because you’ll receive:
- Orientation and guidance
- Suggested conversation frameworks
- Ongoing support from Future Cast and partner organisations
- Access to shared resources and peer exchange
Who Are the Mentees?
The young women in this programme are:
- Students, apprentices, or early-career professionals
- Curious, motivated, and exploring construction career paths
- Often navigating confidence, visibility, and belonging in a male-dominated sector
Your role isn’t to “fix” anything – it’s to walk alongside them as they figure things out.
The mentorship runs flexibly over 2–6 months, typically with 1–2 meetings per month.
The structure adapts to real working lives, not the other way around.
– “Mentorship isn’t about control. It’s about trust, presence, and asking the right questions.”
If you’re a construction professional who:
- Cares about the future of the sector
- Wants to give back in a meaningful, manageable way
- Is open to learning as much as teaching
We’d love to hear from you.
You don’t need all the answers – just the willingness to share your experience.
